Before diving into Brush & Field Mowing, let's start with it is NOT. 

​Brush/Field Mowing is NOT a primary Land Clearing method
Every site is unique, and Brush/Field Mowing may NOT be the appropriate solution for your land if:
​

• The site has stumps, roots & rocks
• The ground is slightly sloped or uneven
• The area hasn't been Grubbed/Cleared in years

If any of these items apply to your land, your site will require heavy Land Clearing methods we offer like Forestry Mulching or Grubbing & Clearing. ​

Brush/Field Mowing is NOT Lawn Mowing 
Generally, Brush/Field Mowing is appropriate in areas where a lawn mower would struggle and/or fail like: 

• Grass being too tall and/or thick
• Small tree saplings, sticks or other large objects
• Ground being slightly sloped/uneven

Once your ground has been cleared properly, then Brush & Field Mowing is a good solution for keeping your ground in a meadow-like condition. Our flail mower can handle any combination of sticks, grass and brush up to about a 3" diameter sapling. ​

More About Brush/Field Flair Mowing
At Southern Exposure, we do not use rotary cutters to brush mow because of the following shortcomings and inferior finished product:
​

1. Rotary cutters do not conform to uneven ground well and do not provide as uniform a cut as a flail mower.  They do not smooth or "rake" ground as well as a flail mower.
2. Rotary cutters leave little "punji sticks" or shin stabbers, where young saplings or shrubs are cut above ground level.  A flail mower will completely grind these down into small pieces which will then decompose, leaving a much smoother and safer surface than a rotary cutter.
3. Rotary cutters do not grind material as fine and leave more large sticks or twigs on the ground.

​Customers who hire us annually to Flail Mow have noticed their site gets more smooth and even over time. Eventually, these sites can be mowed with a standard lawn mower if consistently maintained with a brush/field flail mower. If you've hired us for Land Clearing services like Forestry Mulching, we strongly encourage you to flail mow the site annually to keep your investment looking good.

​Below are some videos we've found that explain the differences between flail mowers and rotary cutter mowers, and why flail mowers are often superior, especially in mixed vegetation or uneven ground. We have found that a flail mower provides a better finish and more complete grind of plant materials than a rotary cutter mower/mulcher. Drum style heads, like those on our flail mowers and forestry mulchers, do a much better job of smoothing the ground and clippings as well as mowing.

Stump Grinding

Got Stumps? Look no further! This method is best for land with individual or small groups of stumps, roots in areas near buildings, finished landscapes, or lawns/areas with limited access.

Once the Stump Grinding work is done and the stumps are ground into fine shavings, the area will be raked smooth and grass or other vegetation will be replanted.
