Forestry Mulching

Forestry Mulching is an ideal land clearing solution without the nuisance of ugly slash piles, burning or removal of topsoil. This approach to land clearing is ideal for wet or sensitive sites, for working around trees or features you want to keep untouched, or for areas you wish to maintain later as meadows or open yard.

Our Forestry Mulching Experience

Did you know that we are the most experienced forestry mulching contractor based on the Southern Kenai Peninsula?

Our team has thousands of hours of experience. From small forest ski trails, parks, and right-of-ways and utility easements, to 80 acre agricultural sites. We achieve unmatched levels of precision when working around desirable trees and obstacles of less than 3 inches.

If your site is wet, has steep slopes or is near structures or roadways, do NOT risk your safety or the integrity of your site or neighbors.

The right equipment and highly skilled operators are essential to providing a high quality mulched surface, regardless of the project size. In order to create the beautiful and smooth, park-like finishes and blended soil surfaces that customers should expect from a forestry mulching contractor, the operator must be highly skilled in both operation of the equipment and in understanding the soils, hydrology and underground environment of each site. This exceptional level of detail and artistry can only come experience.

Is Forestry Mulching Right For Your Land?

Our forestry mulching machines easily clear stumps and logs up to 4 feet in diameter (larger than anything you'll find on the Kenai Peninsula). For areas where complete grubbing and clearing of a site with heavy machinery like an excavator or bulldozer are excessive (which is most of the time), forestry mulching is often a faster, more economical and ecological friendly approach to preparing your site.
We only use the highest quality, industry-leading Fecon, drum-style, heavy mulching heads.

Unlike rotary brush cutters or disc cutting heads, drum-style mulching and cutting heads smooth, blend and till the soil surface and grind woody debris and sticks into smaller pieces. These factors combine to create:
  • A better finish
  • Faster re-vegetation of grass to prevent erosion
  • A smoother surface
  • Faster decomposition of woody debris, due to smaller particle size.

Forestry Mulching In Homer

Picture
Forestry Mulching has gained popularity with newer contractors in the Homer area, but that doesn't always mean this land clearing method is done right.

Many newer operators are inexperienced and are using the wrong equipment, providing inferior clearing and mulching services.

Hiring a contractor that lacks experience with forestry mulching may negate many of the advantages of mulching by damaging soil, or even make it necessary to re-do work that should have only been done once.

Southern Exposure has been hired several times to "fix" mulching and land-clearing work performed by other contractors.
Pro-Tip: If you're unsure about a contractor's experience, ask to visit sites they've cleared or speak with previous customers. Pay close attention to how well sites have re-vegetated or maintained their surface after 1-2 years. Ask how many hours of experience their lead operators with forestry mulching. You get what you pay for. If a contractor's price or timeline sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
